Stargazing in NamibRand Nature Reserve (2026)

Bortle 1 · International Dark Sky Reserve (DarkSky International)
🌠 Geminids 2026 — watchable from the Southern Hemisphere too. Unlike the Perseids, the Geminid radiant is far enough north of the celestial equator to remain genuinely visible south of the equator, just at reduced rates. The shower peaks the night of Dec 13–14 under a dark, moon-free sky; the best window here runs midnight through dawn, facing generally north toward Gemini. Before you go: PRIVATE reserve - access is for paying guests of the concession lodges only, with guided/lodge-based stargazing. From this site, expect roughly 30–60 meteors an hour at peak from a dark site. December is summer here, so no cold-weather gear needed — just the usual dark-sky basics. Full Geminids 2026 guide →

Sky Report: NamibRand Nature Reserve

What is Bortle 1?

The sky is almost overwhelming — the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a faint shadow, and thousands of stars are visible at once alongside zodiacal light and natural airglow.

Clear-sky outlook

Gold Tier IDSR (May 2012), the second Gold-Tier site on Earth and first in Africa/the developing world; reserve area 172,200 ha. Mean night-sky brightness ~21.9 mag/arcsec2 (Hanel, Jun 2022). Dry winter (May-Oct) is clearest and coolest; cloudier/rainy Dec-Apr.

Can you actually stargaze here? Booking or permit required — you cannot just show up

PRIVATE reserve - access is for paying guests of the concession lodges only, with guided/lodge-based stargazing. There is no public roadside access; you cannot simply turn up after dark. Five tourism concessionaires collect a daily park fee.

From Windhoek ~5-6 hr self-drive (gravel C-roads; tar ends near Rehoboth) or fly-in by light aircraft to lodge airstrips. Do NOT drive after sunset (insurance void, wildlife). Fuel scarce - fill at Solitaire/Maltahohe.

Nearest major airport: Hosea Kutako International, Windhoek (WDH) · ~330 min drive

Gateway towns: Sesriem, Namibia · Maltahohe, Namibia · Windhoek, Namibia
