Stargazing in Ramon Crater (Makhtesh Ramon) (2026)

Bortle n/a · International Dark Sky Park (DarkSky International)
🌠 Perseids 2026 — a rare moonless peak. The shower peaks overnight Aug 12 into pre-dawn Aug 13 on a new moon, so the sky stays fully dark all night — the best Perseid conditions in years. Best rates are 2–5 AM local; just look up (meteors appear all over the sky). Before you go: OPEN (self-drive): the Mitzpe Ramon promenade (crater rim, in town) and pull-outs along Route 40 through the makhtesh are freely accessible after dark. From these skies, expect a strong showing under clear, dark conditions — not the '100 per hour' quoted elsewhere. Full Perseids 2026 guide →
🌠 Geminids 2026 — the year's strongest shower, on a dark-sky night. Peaking overnight Dec 13 into the morning of Dec 14, on a thin waxing crescent moon that sets early evening, so the sky stays dark for the whole night. Good activity starts as early as 9–10 PM local — earlier than most showers — and climbs to a peak around 1–2 AM. Unlike almost every other shower, the Geminids come from an asteroid (3200 Phaethon, not a comet), producing slower, more colorful, easier-to-track streaks. Before you go: OPEN (self-drive): the Mitzpe Ramon promenade (crater rim, in town) and pull-outs along Route 40 through the makhtesh are freely accessible after dark. From these skies, expect a strong showing under clear, dark conditions, outpacing even the Perseids. Dress for winter — it's a cold-weather shower. Full Geminids 2026 guide →

Sky Report: Ramon Crater (Makhtesh Ramon)

Clear-sky outlook

Exceptionally dry, clear desert skies - among the best in the Middle East, and the region's first International Dark Sky Park (2017). The crater's bowl shields against stray light. Summer nights are warm and clear (but daytime heat is extreme); Oct-May is most comfortable.

Can you actually stargaze here? Open all night — no gate, no permit

OPEN (self-drive): the Mitzpe Ramon promenade (crater rim, in town) and pull-outs along Route 40 through the makhtesh are freely accessible after dark. The INPA visitor centre is daytime-only. Note: the built 'lookout porch' structure on the promenade is currently gated/closed for safety, but the rim viewpoints beside it remain open 24/7. Many local operators run guided telescope tours.

Route 40 runs from Be'er Sheva through Mitzpe Ramon and descends into the makhtesh - open to self-drive day and night. Fuel and services in Mitzpe Ramon; none in the crater. Buses do not run on Shabbat (Fri afternoon-Sat night).
