Stargazing in Atacama Desert / San Pedro de Atacama (2026)
Bortle 1
🌠 Geminids 2026 — watchable from the Southern Hemisphere too. Unlike the Perseids, the Geminid radiant is far enough north of the celestial equator to remain genuinely visible south of the equator, just at reduced rates. The shower peaks the night of Dec 13–14 under a dark, moon-free sky; the best window here runs midnight through dawn, facing generally north toward Gemini. Before you go: San Pedro town and surrounding ayllus are freely accessible at night. From this site, expect roughly 30–60 meteors an hour at peak from a dark site. December is summer here, so no cold-weather gear needed — just the usual dark-sky basics. Full Geminids 2026 guide →
The sky is almost overwhelming — the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a faint shadow, and thousands of stars are visible at once alongside zodiacal light and natural airglow.
About 330 clear nights in a typical year (82-90% cloud-free probability on any given night, vs 66-77% at La Palma); extremely dry air (<1% humidity). The Atacama hosts roughly half the world's ground-based astronomy. Brief altiplanic winter storms possible Jan-Feb.
