Safety & Crowds
SAFETY-FLAGGED: Berlin's unofficial street-fireworks culture is dangerous — the 2024/25 turn of the year saw 5 deaths nationally, with Berlin reporting 330-400 detained, at least 13 attacks on emergency workers, at least ~24 police officers injured, and ~1,892 fire-brigade incidents; illegal Kugelbomben caused severe damage. Multiple citywide Böller/weapon prohibition zones (Alexanderplatz, Sonnenallee/Neukölln, Steinmetzkiez, Admiralbrücke, Brandenburg Gate area). Attend ONLY the official fenced event (if confirmed); do not linger on open streets. A Germany/Berlin-wide fireworks ban was debated at the Dec 2025 Innenministerkonferenz but NOT enacted as of July 2026 (the Netherlands has a confirmed national consumer-fireworks ban, the 'Wet veilige jaarwisseling', first applying to NYE 2026/27).
Getting There
For the 2025/26 event the Brandenburg Gate U/S-Bahn station closed from ~16:00; Straße des 17. Juni and Großer Stern closed to traffic; expect similar road/station closures if the event runs.
Alcohol
At the fenced Brandenburg Gate event, no own food, alcohol or fireworks are permitted; bag checks apply.
New Year's Day (Jan 1)
S-Bahn returns to Sunday timetable from ~09:00 on 1 Jan; streets around the government/Tiergarten quarter reopen progressively.
