Stargazing in Headlands International Dark Sky Park, MI (2026)
Bortle 3 · International Dark Sky Park (DarkSky International)
🌠 Perseids 2026 — a rare moonless peak. The shower peaks overnight Aug 12 into pre-dawn Aug 13 on a new moon, so the sky stays fully dark all night — the best Perseid conditions in years. Best rates are 2–5 AM local; just look up (meteors appear all over the sky). Before you go: UNRESTRICTED. From these skies, expect roughly 60–80 meteors an hour under clear conditions — not the '100 per hour' quoted elsewhere. Full Perseids 2026 guide →
🌠 Geminids 2026 — the year's strongest shower, on a dark-sky night. Peaking overnight Dec 13 into the morning of Dec 14, on a thin waxing crescent moon that sets early evening, so the sky stays dark for the whole night. Good activity starts as early as 9–10 PM local — earlier than most showers — and climbs to a peak around 1–2 AM. Unlike almost every other shower, the Geminids come from an asteroid (3200 Phaethon, not a comet), producing slower, more colorful, easier-to-track streaks. Before you go: UNRESTRICTED. From these skies, expect roughly 40–60 meteors an hour under clear conditions, outpacing even the Perseids. Dress for winter — it's a cold-weather shower. Full Geminids 2026 guide →
Sky Report: Headlands International Dark Sky Park
Sky darkness: Bortle 3
Designation: International Dark Sky Park — DarkSky International (Certified)
Elevation: 184 m
Best months: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
Milky Way core: late Apr - early Sep (core season); summer best
The Milky Way is still complex and detailed. Several star clusters are naked-eye objects — this is where the sky becomes genuinely spectacular for most people.
Great Lakes lake-effect cloud common; summer offers most clear nights. Lakeshore is consistently ~10F colder and windier than inland.
Can you actually stargaze here? Open all night — no gate, no permit
UNRESTRICTED. The grounds, trails and viewing areas are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, free of charge. The park explicitly invites visitors to stay out through the night for dark-sky viewing. This is the rare major dark-sky site with no gate, no fee, and no permit.
Common mistake: Camping is NOT permitted despite 24-hour access. The park describes itself as a place to stay awake and view the stars, not an overnight sleeping destination. Visitors expecting to pitch a tent will be disappointed.
Dress far warmer than you expect: the park advises temperatures typically run about 10 degrees lower than forecast because of the Lake Michigan shoreline exposure.
White lights - including phone screens - are not permitted in the designated viewing area. Red-filtered flashlights are permitted and sold on site.
Arrive before sunset to find parking and get settled; parking near the viewing area is limited and the park draws crowds around sunset.
600 acres with over two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and about five miles of trails.
Located roughly 2 miles west of downtown Mackinaw City.
Pit toilets available at the shoreline viewing area; indoor restrooms at the visitor centre.
Gift shop hours are seasonal - July 2026 hours are 4:30 PM to midnight, seven days a week. Call to confirm.
Free monthly dark-sky programs are held year-round.
Well-behaved pets permitted on a six-foot leash.
Entry fee: Free. No entrance fee.
2 miles west of downtown Mackinaw City at 15675 Headlands Road; paved road to a 24-hour parking area. Last fuel/services in Mackinaw City.
Nearest major airport: Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) · ~30 min drive
