Celebration elements: Countdown ceremony
High risk — No official display to view; cold winter night. Any lights are unofficial/illegal street fireworks.
No official show. Unofficial street/Vltava/Charles Bridge fireworks are dangerous and largely illegal (city ordinance since 2020; national Pyrotechnics Act amendment from 1 Dec 2025). Do NOT treat crowded riverbanks or Old Town/Charles Bridge as safe viewing spots — heavy crowds, pickpockets, and stray fireworks. Fines up to CZK 10,000.
Historic-center streets around Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square close from ~20:00 on 31 Dec; metro runs ~2 hours later than usual (last trains ~02:00).
Street drinking common but pickpocketing rises; consumer fireworks banned in central zones.
City offers discounted 1 Jan entry to attractions (zoo, botanical garden, Petřín tower, planetarium, public transport museum) in lieu of fireworks; an informal, non-official barge fireworks sometimes occurs ~18:00 on 1 Jan but is not a city event.
