Fairfax High School / Stalnaker Stadium (primary viewing site)
High crowd · Arrive by 7:00 PM · park · Free
Primary viewing site for the City of Fairfax Evening Show, 6:30–10:30 PM, fireworks ~9:30 PM. In recent years fireworks launch from Army-Navy Country Club (not the stadium field) with the stadium used for seating — confirm the 2026 seating side on the City Parks & Rec Facebook page before arriving. Face the launch area (generally south/southwest toward Army-Navy CC). Bring chairs and blankets; bag checks run 4:30–5:30 PM. Onsite parking VERY limited; Lion Run Pkwy closed 4–11 PM. Use the free shuttles. Show type: unconfirmed — verify before attending.
Sightline: Confirmed on the correct seating side, the stadium gives an open south/southwest sightline to the Army-Navy CC launch area. Stadium rim and some tree lines clip the lowest shells — center bleacher positions are best. Verify the seating orientation for 2026 before arriving, as it has shifted in prior years.
⚠️ ⚠️ Confirm 2026 seating configuration — the stadium layout for fireworks viewing has varied by year depending on which side faces the launch. Check the City of Fairfax Parks & Rec Facebook page ~1–2 weeks before July 4. Lion Run Pkwy is closed 4–11 PM; plan alternate routes in advance.
Medium crowd · Arrive by 5:30 PM · elevated · Free
Recommended park-and-ride: free shuttle to the celebration runs from GMU's Rappahannock River Parking Deck (4395 University Drive), Woodson HS (9525 Main St), and Fairfax United Methodist Church — shuttles run from ~5:30 PM. The deck's upper levels also give a distant northwest-facing angle on high bursts for those who prefer watching from the deck rather than the stadium. Take the shuttle for the full show experience. Note: Free parking. Show type: unconfirmed — verify before attending.
Sightline: Upper deck levels face northwest toward Fairfax HS / Army-Navy CC (~2 miles). At this distance only the highest aerial bursts clear the intervening tree line and suburban rooftops. The shuttle to the stadium is the dramatically better option for the actual show — the deck view is a fallback.
⚠️ Shuttles are the recommended access route — use them. Driving to the stadium itself means navigating Lion Run Pkwy's 4–11 PM closure and very limited parking. If you take the shuttle, plan for crowded returns after the show.
Old Town Fairfax — Main St / University Dr (parade hub)
Medium crowd · Arrive by 9:00 AM · landmark · Free
Old Town hosts Virginia's largest July 4 parade — per the Old Town Fairfax Business Association, started 1967 and opening with a Flying Circus WWII-plane flyover. The parade runs in the morning; for fireworks, Old Town is ~1 mile east of the Army-Navy CC launch area so high bursts may peek above the tree line — face west/southwest. Better for the daytime parade and restaurants than an unobstructed fireworks vantage. Show type: unconfirmed — verify before attending.
Sightline: ~1 mile east of the launch; suburban tree line and rooftops between Old Town and the fireworks site obstruct most of the show from street level. Only the very highest finale bursts may clear the obstruction. This is a parade and dining destination — go to the stadium for the fireworks.
⚠️ Arrive VERY early for the morning parade — the July 4 parade draws enormous crowds along Main St and parking fills by 8 AM. For evening fireworks, plan your route to the stadium well in advance and do NOT attempt to drive there from Old Town after 6 PM.
Country Club of Fairfax — Ox Road sidewalks (JULY 3 bonus show)
Medium crowd · Arrive by 9:00 PM · landmark · Free
⚠️ JULY 3 SHOW — one day before July 4. The Country Club of Fairfax fires its own display ~9:15 PM on Friday, July 3. Neighbors and passersby set up chairs along the Ox Road sidewalk and at University Mall/Salvation Army lots; face the club grounds to the west. Do NOT park on Ox Road — use side streets (Portsmouth, Marlborough, Ames). Loud at close range for 30+ minutes. Show type: unconfirmed — verify before attending.
Sightline: Close-range sidewalk view of the club's fireworks — shells fire overhead at low altitude from the club grounds to the west. The display is private (for members) but clearly visible from the public sidewalk along Ox Road. One of the more unique free views in the area.
⚠️ ⚠️ JULY 3, not July 4. Do not plan this as your primary July 4 show. Ox Road itself is dangerous to stand on — use the sidewalk only. Residential parking is limited; side streets fill with neighbors. Expect very loud close-range noise.
Residence Inn by Marriott Fairfax City — base hotel
Low crowd · Arrive by 5:00 PM · hotel room · Paid
All-suite hotel near GMU and I-66/Rt 50. The fireworks launch (Army-Navy CC area) is ~2 miles southwest and partly tree-screened — request an UPPER-FLOOR suite facing SOUTHWEST and treat any view as a bonus, NOT guaranteed. Near Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro (Silver Line). Book 3–4 weeks ahead for July 4 weekend. Ride the free shuttle to the stadium for the actual show. Show type: unconfirmed — verify before attending.
Sightline: ~2 miles northeast of the Army-Navy CC launch with suburban trees and rooftops in between. Only the highest finale bursts may clear the obstruction from upper SW-facing floors. A logistics base, not a fireworks-view hotel — the stadium shuttle is the right way to experience the show.
⚠️ Do not book expecting a room fireworks view — it's not reliable at this distance. Near Fairfax-GMU Metro; Silver Line is a convenient option to avoid post-show traffic.
⚠️ No confirmed launch site for this city. Viewing spots shown are approximate.
