Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night) — Lewes 2026

East Sussex, United Kingdom

✓
Confirmed — The 2026 Bonfire Night programme for Lewes has been officially announced.
Fireworks + Light Show  ·  17:00 local · Europe/London
The single most famous Guy Fawkes destination in the UK, but it is NOT primarily a fireworks show -- the official council page states explicitly it 'is not a firework display as people expect.' The core event is torchlit processions by six/seven Bonfire Societies (plus 25-30 visiting Sussex societies), starting ~5pm and running until ~1am, converging through the town's narrow streets. Fireworks and burning tableaux happen later (~9:45pm-11pm) at separate, individually ticketed 'firesites' run by each society (e.g. Cliffe at Ham Lane, Southover at Convent Field), not from one central public launch point. Official council/tourism guidance strongly discourages non-resident visitors: trains do not run into Lewes on the night, roads close from ~4:45pm, there is no parking, and the event is described as 'for local residents only' due to safety concerns from dense crowds, torches and firecrackers in narrow streets. Commercial travel sites (Rove.me, EuroTravelo) nonetheless publish visitor guides treating it as an open destination -- this is a real tension in the sourcing, not resolved here in favour of either side.

Weather & Visibility

Medium risk — Early November coastal Sussex weather can be damp; processions and firesite fireworks proceed regardless of light rain.

Safety & Crowds

Official council guidance states this is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues, due to steep hills, dense crowds, flaming torches, firecrackers and long distances between procession routes and firesites. Non-residents are asked not to travel into town; there is a livestream (via Lewes the Podcast and Rocket FM) as a safer remote alternative.

Getting There

No trains stop at Lewes after ~3pm on the night; all roads into town close from ~4:45pm; no town-centre parking available.
