⚠ Rare & opportunistic — not a planned aurora destination

Essentially no dedicated aurora-tour industry — the region's tourism infrastructure is built around Antarctica cruises, not aurora viewing. Self-organized viewing only. The May 2024 G5 storm lit skies here for the first time locally in roughly 165 years, illustrating how rare a good display is.

🌌 Check tonight's forecast before you go

Aurora is a geomagnetic event — it cannot be predicted days in advance. Check the live Kp forecast on the evening you plan to go out, and go if conditions look good.

At a Glance: Ushuaia

⚠ Planning note Avoid December-February entirely — too much daylight this far south in austral summer, not a storm-related gap.

Kp note: Derived. Counterintuitively, the southern auroral oval curves away from South America, so Ushuaia's effective distance to the oval is similar to Tasmania/NZ despite being much further south geographically — it is NOT dramatically better than those Phase 1 sites, and needs strong storms. No site-specific published Kp figure found.

Getting There & Conditions

Gateway: Ushuaia, Argentina

Weather here is often ferocious and cloudy — a genuine, frequent limiting factor, not just an occasional risk.

Viewing Sites

No dedicated viewing sites — this is an opportunistic destination for people already visiting the area. Any dark-sky location away from town lights will work if conditions are right.

Tour Operators

Planning your aurora visit

Self-drive recommended — no organised tour market

💡 Pro tip: Plan a DIY night. There’s no meaningful tour market here; you’ll likely be self-driving to a dark, south-facing coast. The priorities are site selection, a clear-weather window, and cold/road safety.
